Defending champion Diego Schwartzman begins his quest to defend his TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Open title with a comfortable win over Jordan Thompson to reach the quarterfinals.

Istanbul is surely a very special location in Diego Schwartzman’s career. Appearing in his first-ever semifinal in 2015 where he lost to Roger Federer after a very tight match as the fans pay tribute to him cheering “Diego, Diego, Diego!”, Schwartzman earned a spectacular triumph a year later on the clay of Garanti Koza Arena, defeating Grigor Dimitrov in the final.

Playing as the third seed, defending champion dropped only four games in his opening match. Schwartzman, who set a new career-high ranking of no. 34 last week and currently no. 46, didn’t lose a service game as he eased past Jordan Thompson 6-1, 6-3 throughout the match that lasted 81 minutes.

This is the ninth win in 10 matches at the TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Open for the Argentine who is going to take on Dusan Lajovic in the quarterfinal. Following his stunning victory over 7th seed Borna Coric, world no. 84 added another win to the list storming back from a set to oust two-time US Open semifinalist Mikhail Youzhny 3-6, 6-0, 6-3.
