IN-FORM KHACHANOV WINS IN THREE

ATP Next Gen player Karen Khachanov begins his TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Open campaign with a three-setter win over Nikoloz Basilashvili.

Coming to Istanbul with a career-high ranking of no. 42 after his quarterfinal in Barcelona, 20-year-old talented Russian Karen Khachanov starts his campaign knocking out Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-3, 6-7, 6-1.

After drawing blood on the eighth game to break serve, Khachanov grabbed the opening set 6-3. Making his second consecutive appearance in Istanbul, Khachanov managed to come back from 0-3 to take a 5-4 lead.

However he couldn’t complete the set as Basilashvili broke back before grabbing the set with 7/2 tie-break to force the decider. But it was all Khachanov in third, as he dropped only one game and marched on after just over two hours.

ATP NextGen’s Khachanov, who fired nine aces throughout the match, will play Viktor Troicki in the second round. 5th seed Serbian was victorious over former Australian Open runner-up Marcos Baghdatis 7-5, 6-4.

On the opening encounter at the Garanti Koza Arena, last year’s quarterfinalist Damir Dzumhur saved three set points in the second as he dismissed Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 7-5 to set the second round clash with 2nd seed Marin Cilic.
