8th seed Steve Darcis made a solid start at the TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Open as he was victorious in the clash of one-handed backhands against Dudi Sela.
On the second match of day 1, there was an entertaining encounter between two one-handed backhand players where the 8th seed Steve Darcis had a straight-sets win over Dudi Sela to reach the second round at the TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Open.
After earning his first clay-court match win this season beating Sela 7-5, 6-4, Darcis said “Today I felt very comfortable on court. It always gives good confidence when you make such a start.”
Darcis will next play Jiri Vesely, who defeated Marcel Granollers in the opening match of Garanti Koza Arena 7-5, 2-6, 6-4. This was the first win in three matches for the Czech against his Spaniard rival.
World no. 91 Jordan Thompson also advances into last 16 in Istanbul after a strong stuff performance to recover from a set down to knock out qualifier Adrian Menendez-Maceiras 6-7, 6-0, 6-0.
23-year-old Aussie will face the defending champion and third seed Diego Schwartzman for a spot in the TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Open quarterfinals.
