Two Argentines will meet in semifinal at the TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Open.

Argentina’s world no.87 Diego Schwartzman becomes the first player to reach semifinals at the TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Open. Following his stunning upset over Bernard Tomic in the previous round, Schwartzman overcame a match point to defeat Damir Dzumhur 5-7, 7-6, 6-2.

In the 2 hours and 48 minutes encounter, where there were 13 breaks, Schwartzman managed to save a match point while trailing 6-5 in the second. He held his nerves before grabbing the second set by 7/4 tie-break and took it to a decider.

It was all Schwartzman in the third, as he dropped only two games versus a downcast Dzumhur and advanced to his second career semifinal, again coming in Istanbul. Schwartzman had forced Roger Federer to a third set last year at the Garanti Koza Arena, in his maiden semifinal, but couldn’t avoid the 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 loss.

23-year-old will next play fellow countryman Federico Delbonis, who reached his third semifinal of the season, all coming in April. In the meeting of two lefties, 4th seed Delbonis edged out Albert Ramos-Vinolas 7-6, 6-4 as the Spaniard missed a set point in the first.
