Ivo Karlovic, 3th seed of the TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Open, earned his 300th match win and made it into last eight.
It was a special night for 3rd seed Ivo Karlovic at the Garanti Koza Arena as the giant Croat recorded his 300th match win defeating Dusan Lajovic 7-6, 7-6 after a cracking fight and booked his ticket for quarterfinals.
Both players held their serves for the entire match but in the end, 37-year-old Karlovic, who started this season with a 0-6 record, gained his first win of the year with respective tie-breaks 11/9 and 9/7 in 1 hour and 47 minutes.
Saving three set points in first, two in second, Karlovic smashed down 13 aces to Lajovic’s 11. Karlovic, who has the most aces in tennis history, also improved to a 4-0 head-to-head record over Lajovic, defending doubles champion.
GRANOLLERS JOINS LAST EIGHT
2.11m tall Ivo Karlovic will face Marcel Granollers in quarterfinals as the 5th seed Spaniard overcame ATP NextGen player Chung Hyeon of South Korea 6-3, 6-4 in the last match of the day.
World no.54 Granollers broke Chung’s serve in eighth game before closing the first set. Despite falling behind 3-1 earlier in the second, Granollers held his nerves and won five of last six games to reach his second quarterfinal of the season.
