6th seed Jiri Vesely was on action in the first match of the second day of TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Open. Vesely faced Dutch Thiemo de Bakker in his opening encounter, which was played under Garanti Koza Arena’s closed roof, and got through the second round by 6-3, 7-5.
Czech world no. 63 dropped only three points on his first serves in the first set but had to wait till the 11th game to seal the deal in the second. Both players hold their serves for 10 consecutive games but in the end, Vesely, the Novak conquerer in Monte Carlo, used the fifth break opportunity.
Vesely, who lost a three-setter in the first round of Indian Wells to de Bakker, will play Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena in last 16.
