Despite a slow start, 6th seed Bernard Tomic battles back against Mohamed Safwat and advances into TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Open second round.
A year ago Bernard Tomic was competing in Istanbul as top seed but couldn’t prevent an early loss to Diego Schwartzman who then went on winning the tournament. A year later, this time appearing as 6th seed , Tomic didn’t make a mistake in his opener on the Garanti Koza Arena.
24-year-old Aussie, no. 40 in the world ranking, dropped the first set against lucky loser Mohamed Safwat, but managed to turn things around in three minutes under two hours. Securing the comeback win 5-7, 7-5, 6-3, Tomic will next face Rogeri Dutra Silva for a spot in the quarterfinals.
Former world no. 8 and two-time US Open semifinalist Mikhail Youzhny also recovered from a set down to knock out homecrowd favorite Cem Ilkel. Russian veteran, who defeated his young rival 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, will next face the winner of the match between Borna Coric and Dusan Lajovic.
